Conditions update Jan. 2

Summary: Good conditions were out there today, for those up to the drive. Daytrip bets for tomorrow include Canterbury or maybe Notchview, if you can get there in the morning. Prospect Mountain is good too. Be warned that temperatures are warming and rain will arrive. Best conditions for the weekend will be Sunday or more likely Monday.

Just a little bit of snow and sleet, along with some groomer love has improved conditions at some of the most popular and best-known ski touring areas. ‘State of the touring centers’ is updated. See the latest snow depth map:

If I had total flexibility in my schedule, I’d head for Craftsbury, Mountaintop or the White Mountains on Sunday to stay a couple of days and take advantage of midweek rates on lodging.

Forecast for the weekend might be a bit better than expected for the Tug Hill plateau, Green Mountains, and the Presidential range. A bit less rain and a bit more snow can be expected at those higher elevations. Osceola in particular could get several inches. Areas south of the Adirondacks and mid-Vermont will get progressively less snow vs. rain on Friday and Saturday.
