When hope is a plan: conditions for weekend of Dec. 14

There’s hope for some decent skiing on the weekend – but not any closer than Prospect Mountain or Notchview. Wind, rain, and warm temperatures have had their way with the snowpack, and despite that, it still survivies.

This post is about conditions for Dec. 12 2024, and forecast for the next few days. See jump links to Conditions and Forecast.

Conditions

As could be expected, touring centers closed trails when the rain and warm weather came. Now they have to let the snow drain and freeze or the groomers will create a flat slush mess that will turn into ice overnight. In addition to the above, I’d bet the following will open and be skiable enough for a 36-hour weekend: Garnet Hill, Lapland Lake, Marlboro Nordic Ski Club, Woodstock, Viking, Osceola. A bit futher and the major operations of Mt. van Hoevenberg, Craftsbury, Trapp Family Lodge, and Waterville Valley come into range.

Conditions won’t be ideal, but we’ve had worse ten days before Christmas. Hit up ‘State of the touring centers‘ or in the menu above for reported conditions as of today. Dig a bit beyond the ‘no skiing’ markers because the details are in the Word. Snow depth graphic below:

Forecast

While the rain this week may have been greater than expected along the coast and in the southern areas, it was about as forecast for the north. It even ended with some snow.

The wintry temperatures will moderate over the weekend and trend upward till mid-week, after which things will cool toward more normal daytime temps. Lake effect snow will taper off on Friday.

Along with the warming will come some moisture, starting with snow showers or wintry mix on Sunday. This will change to showers and rain for Monday and Tuesday in the southern areas, and possibly wintry mix in the far north. Wednesday will see a tapering off and possibly a brief respite, before getting wintry mix or showers in the south, and snow showers in the north. This will happen Wednesday night and perhaps on Thursday. Winds will generally be mild for the next several days.
