Nor’easter update: 4/4/24

A classic nor’easter delivered anywhere between a few inches and a foot of snow across northern New York State, Vermont, and New Hampshire. Some additional snow expected through this evening. Power is out for thousands due to the heavy snow and high winds.

Mount van Hoevenberg got about 3.5″ of snow, Prospect Mountain 8″, Wild Wings 9″, and Bear Notch 11″. Marlboro in southern Vermont reports about a foot of snow. Trapp Family Lodge reports receving 8-10″ of snow so far and is expecting another 8-10″ by Friday morning. Heaviest accumulations went toward the northeast of the region, and the mountains in northern Maine could have 2 feet of new snow by tomorrow.

Due to the lateness of this storm in the season, more snow expected, and the severity of weather impact, not all the touring centers are jumping onto their grooming equipment.

Status report

The bellwether areas that report trails open for skiing are: Lapland Lake, Prospect Mountain, Cascade, Woodstock, Marlboro Nordic Ski Club, Trapp Family Lodge, and Mount van Hoevenberg, although the last two report ‘ski at your own risk’ except where noted in their reports.

Taking some time to assess snow conditions for possible grooming for Friday include these areas: Garnet Hiill, Wild Wings, Viking, Oak Hill Outdoor Center, Bear Notch, Bretton Woods, and Waterville Valley.

In some cases grooming would be a brief ‘courtsesy grooming’ for the die-hard skiers and not a real reopening. Check the center websites or call if in doubt.

Gore Mountain ski bowl, Paul Smith’s, Craftsbury, Rikert, Great Glen, Jackson STF, have either not updated or had already declared themselves offseason before the storm.
