Bolton Valley reporting something skiable. The White Mountains may get a couple of inches of snow today, but it might not be enough to make Bear Notch open the office or fire up the grooming machine.

  • Boltaon Valley Nordic reports a dusting of snow on Thursday, and XC skiing possible despite water bars.
  • Bear Notch Ski Touring hasn’t updated since the 1th.
  • Waterville Valley calls it done after today.

Scant amounts of snow have kept some informal after-season skiing alive in the Tug Hill and northern New Hampshire, as well as at some of the downhill ski areas.

On a totally different topic

Picking up a line of thourght related to a post from last year, in which I mused whether preparing for winter warfare is a spur to the ski industry, I found another article this year. Today the NYTimes posted a piece that focused on joint exercises between US and Finnish troops – “Prepping for War With Russia on the Ice and Snow”:

The article includes a bit about using skis, including a short video with the caption: “The Finns were nimble attackers, zigzagging through the woods on long, narrow skis.”
