Waiting for it: Snow is in the forecast

Touring centers and trails are in a holding pattern where possible. A number of areas above the I-90 corridor from the southern Adirondacks to the Green Mountains received slight refreshing from dustings of snow. However all will welcome a solid accumulation of new snow.

This post is about conditions for Dec. 4 2024, and forecast for the next few days. See jump links to Conditions and Forecast.

Conditions

Areas and trails that got snow and are good at grooming have been hanging on, but they had to have received enough snow over the past week to make it worthwhile.

Hit up ‘State of the touring centers‘ or in the menu above for reported conditions as of today. The list of touring centers with ‘skiable’ conditions or better are both lucky and dedicated.

Forecast

A weather system will bring precipitation for the latter part of this week. This timing is auspicious for weekend skiing. Rain and snow will start tonight and go thru Thursday. Expect high winds (20-30mph) and gusts up to 40-50mph.

The NYC metro and lower Hudson valley are likely to get rain primarily, although the cold air arriving may push the dewpoint low enough for some scant snow accumulation.

A winter storm warning is in effect further north, with snow accumulations ranging from a few inches to over 12″ across elevated aras of the southern Adirondacks and Green Mountains. The far north is expected to have lower toal accumulations- up to 6″ in the northern Adirondacks, northern Green Mountains, and White Mountains.

Total snowfall forecast through Dec. 6, 7am EST (NWS)

This storm will be over by daytime Friday, although lake effect snow will continue for parts of the interior.

The weekend will start with temperatures 5-8 degrees below normal, but the regular workweek will see much milder temperatures, and some precipitaiton. Good chance of precipitation for the first half of the week as a front moves through. Rain expected in southern and coastal aras, with more mixed precipitation in the northern interior.
