Forecasts are predicting a significant winter storm across a swath of the north country and higher elevations starting Friday night and lasting through most of Saturday. This will be heavy wet snow. Some areas of freezing rain or ice in the region between I-90 and the Green Mountains, with heavy rain expected in the flat lands and southgern region.

The touring centers in the zone of high snowfall can fire up their equipment starting Sunday afternoon and provide at least a fewcouple of days of skiing before rain threatens to arrive in the midweek, along with warming temperatures. Regardless, if there’s more than 8″ of snow, and especially if there’s any remaining base, there could be spring skiing to be had from Sunday through most or all of the upcoming week.

The Albany office of the National Weather Service covers the Captiol region, southern Adirondacks, Catskills, and most of the Hudson Valley:

In the southern Adirondacks and Lake George region, temperatures will likely remain cold enough to see snow throughout the storm, resulting in snowfall totals of 6-10 inches

Vermont expects some of the greatest amounts of snowfall:

Snow will generally overspread the area from southwest to northeast between 8 PM and midnight in northern New York and 1 AM to 4 AM in Vermont. By 5 AM intensity of snow should be exceeding 1″ per hour in much of the region, especially in a swath from the Adirondacks into central Vermont… By Saturday evening we expect all snow again… very heavy snow is possible in southeastern areas if this low tracks far enough west.

Some exceptionaly large amounts of snow are forecast for the Green Mountains, as shownin the graphic below:

As for New Hampshire and Maine, the snow will fall inland in the mountains, so expect the White Mountain areas to have some skiing next week:

It`s worth noting that even the coldest guidance brings temps above freezing aloft all the way to the edge of the mountains, bringing in sleet and keeping snow totals down somewhat. This effect increases with southward progression, with areas near the Canadian border standing the best chance to remain all snow.
