Yearning for spring skiing: Mar. 18 2024

We’re getting to the last licks of a season haunted by a marginal snowpack, but this week brings renewed opportunities: colder weather and multiple systems that altogtether could revivie a bit of skiing for those in a position to take advantage.

This post is about conditions for Mar. 18 2024, and forecast for the next few days. See jump link to Forecast for the lastest news.

Conditions

Notably, Garnet Hill and Laplland Lake closed trails for skiing. They might reopen them if they get enough snow this week. Hit up ‘State of the touring centers‘ or in the menu above for reported conditions as of today. Snow depth graphic below:

Forecast

The short take: Multiple opportunities for small but potentially useful amounts of snow in the north country. Colder than normal with gusty winds in the latter half of the week.

Lake-effect snow across much of northern portions of New York State and New England for the early part of the week. Accumulations could be significant at some higher elevations.

By midweek, a system brings precipitation across the entire northeast. Primarily rain showers in the areas south of Albany and the I-90 corridor, and a mix of heavier rain, wintry mix, and snow for areas north. Type of precipitation will be largely elevation delpendent, with rain prevalent in the river valleys, more snow in the mountains. Night time temperatures will turn the rain showers to snow. NWS may issue weather advisories for this.

Thursday will be mostly dry, with cooler temperatures than the early part of the week. Expect some gusty winds during the mid to latter part of the week.

For Friday and Saturday, another system arrives, bringing more snow showers as well as some wintry mix and rain showers. Snow showers could make a brief appearance across the wider lowlands of the northeast and southern New England, but will primarily fall across New York State and Northern New England. Some changeover to rain showers during the day Saturday can be expected. Weather dries out on Sunday.
