Surprise! A lot of snow fell over the weekend, with amounts of a foot or more in some very specific localities (looking at you Stowe). If I were in the mood for the drive I’d be on the way to Trapp Family Lodge. But Garnet Hill, Prospect Mountain, and the areas in the White Mountains (Bear Notch, Bretton Woods, Jackson STF, Great Glen, Waterville Valley) also offer skiable conditions.

This post is about conditions for Mar. 12 2024, and forecast for the next few days. See jump links to Conditions and Forecast.
Conditions
Yesterday would have been the travel day, as high winds that came with the snow caused power outages and significant debris fall. Winds were strong enough to have gone ‘ski-sailing’. Although a few areas were open, many needed to take a day or two to let the water drain from the snow and clear debris. Friends of backcountry skiing might find a few areas with some skiable conditions, but they might have to be prepared to pick their way through to get to high country with a pre-existing base.
On. the other hand, for those select places in the northeast, cross-country skiing got an end-of-season reprieve! Get out early in the morning before the snow gets too soft, but enjoy the spring skiing conditions. Get it while it lasts.

Snow depth as of today looks so much more like what it ‘should’ be for mid-March than just a few days ago. It’s worth noting that under ‘normal’ conditions, the recorded depth would include a base of dense, solidified snow and ice, something that would help keep conditions going just a bit longer than we’re likely to get. Hit up ‘State of the touring centers‘ or in the menu above for reported conditions as of today.

Forecast
Warm weather for the midweek, becoming slightly cooler for the weekend. Clear skies will encourage radiational cooling overnight. However multiple systems expected to bring rain showers for the weekend.
Dry for Tuesday and Wednesday, with temps going into the 60s in the valleys of northern regions. Still breezy, but not as much as Monday.
Forecasts are uncertain about when rain begins late in the week, but best guess is that it will start in western parts of the region late Thursday, overspreading northern New York State and New England by the evening or overnight into Friday. Rain showers for the region expected through Friday before tapering off Saturday, possibly as snow showers in the far north. Little accumulation of water or snow.
Another confluence of ‘unsettled’ systems will bring rain showers across the entire northeastern United States on Sunday, although cooler temperatures in mountains of the fart north could turn the precipitation into snow showers during part of the day. Precipitation continues through Monday, as temperatures cool toward seasonable norms in the early part of next week.
