It snowed(!)… and extras: Mar. 10 2024

Luck for skiers in the late season- Prospect Mountain is open, with limited grooming on some trails. A bit of hard luck for some areas where the power went out:

According to the National Weather Service, Warren received 12 inches overnight. About 12.5 inches of snow dropped in Braintree, 11.5 inches in Rochester and 10 in Williamstown and Northfield, according to the weather service, while most other parts of the state received 1 to 6 inches.

For once this season, the weather systems did what the forecasts said they would.

Conditions

As predicted, the southern Adirondacks, Green Mountains, and White Mountains got significant amounts at higher elevations. In addition to Prospect Mountain, Lapland Lake has limited trails open, but power went out. Several areas need some time for trails to drain before they can groom.

More snow may yet arrive from another small system. Expect a windy day today, and warm weather coming for the week.

Window on Winter: A few things in the news that caught my eye.

Vermont Public’s ‘The Frequency’ featured an audio story on the impact of warming winters on Vermont high school students and their cross-country ski training in “‘Ski change ‘”Ski Change” (maybe a play on the phrase ‘sea change’):

…and though higher elevations have had near normal snowfall, valleys across the Green Mountain State have been bare for much of the season. That disrupted training schedules for established athletes, and prevented prospective skiers from fully getting into the sport.

Another VP show, ‘Brave Little State’, reported on “What impact does the VAST trail have on Vermont’s economy?”, about the Vermont Association of Snow Travelers network of trails, focusing on people in the Northeast Kingdom:

If we had a good snow machine weekend and they support us well, it was a real bonus. But you don’t want to plan on making your payments on something that’s dependent on the weather in Vermont, for sure.

Meanwhile, NRK (Norwegian TV channel) reported on drunken brawlers and booing of the winner at the Holmenkollen. Article in The Guardian: “Women’s cross-country ski race in Norway marred by drunk fans fighting:

Most have behaved, but it is challenging and difficult with heavily intoxicated young people,
