No word from Minnewaska in the last week, but it’s doubtful they have managed to keep the Upper Awosting trail groomed without any significant s nowfall. Next nearest places are Notchview and Prospect Mountain.

This post is about conditions for Feb. 23, 2024, and forecast for the next few days. See jump links to Conditions and Forecast.

Conditions

Spring skiing, fast and firm in the morning, soft and fast in the daytime. Klister and Maxiglide have been the rule for a few days. Just enough new snow in the higher elevations to keep things interesting. BETA report of 2/22 reports of good cover in parts of the backcountry, although the surface can be hard, and Dewey Mountain trails are in cood condition.

The conditions of the past few days will change for Saturday. Expect hard and fast tracks, cold and windy conditions. A taste of winter before a resumption of warm weather starting Sunday. That plus rain in midweek will do some damage to the already-thin snowpack.

Hit up ‘State of the touring centers‘ or in the menu above for reported conditions as of today. Snow depth graphic below:

Forecast

Light lake effect driven snow showers in parts of the Adirondacks and elevated areas of Vermont tonight. Cold and breezy on Saturday, with temperatures below normal and winds of 20-30mph in northern areas. The weather will quickly warm up on Sunday, and a fast moving sysem will bring light snow showers Sunday night.

Mild weather is coming for the first part of next week. Widespread rain and rain showers arrive across the region Tuesday evening and continue through Wednesday. Strong winds of 30-40mph are expected in the northern parts of the northeast, and rains could be heavy.

A warm low pressure system brings more rain sometime Wednesday, just before slightly cooler weather. Most likely result is one or two days of rain that may end as wintry mix or even light snow in northern New York State, Vermont, and New Hampshire. ‘Cold’ is relative though, as temperatures will still be above normal for this time of year.

Mild temperatures continue into the following weekend, and rain may arrive Saturday.
