Waiting for the Groundhog: Jan. 29 2024

Wet snow this weekend means XC skiing from the Berkshires to Tug Hill in the west and the White Mountains in the east, Great Glen in the White Mountains has packed powder because elevation is their friend. Stay tuned for later in the week, as the westher gets cooler and two systems will bring some precipitation.

This post is about conditions for Jan. 29 2024, and forecast for the next few days. See jump links to Conditions and Forecast.

Conditions

BETA report of 1/29 kind of sums it up for much of the region:

There is still snow cover on all trails, but it is thin in spots. Surfaces are frozen granular, so the only skiing worth mentioning are the groomed centers that have enough snow to actually groom.

Barkeater Trails Alliance

The weekend storm delivered rain to us downstaters, but where it fell as wet snow on a solid base, skiing continues. Better yet, some areas like the Berkshires, Green Mountains, and southern Adirondacks got enough snow to revive the trail systems. Check out Prospect Mountain, Marlboro Outing Club, Canterbury Farm, Notchview, Garnet Hill and Lapland Lake– Tuesday might be even better as the snow settles.

Hit up ‘State of the touring centers‘ or in the menu above for reported conditions as of today. The graphic below depcts the amount of snowfall from the weekend:

Forecast

Dry conditions and a slight warming trend during the the week, with cooler weather and snow showers during the weekend.

For the first part of the week, the northeast will be dry and experience slightly warmer than normal temperatures. A Canadian high pressure system will remain in place north of the region throughout the week.

A system will pass through the midwest during the midweek and by early Thursday will move into our region, causing a mix of precipitation starting in the north country and spreading across the northeast by end of day. Snow showers will predominate north of the Hudson Highlands and CT-MA border, with rain southward. No significant accumulation is expected.

On Friday, as temperatures cool and a second low pressure system in the Atlantic arrives, snow showers will continue up north and rain could convert to snow further south as well. This system will last through the first half of the weekend, ending sometime Sunday. There is some chance for good accumulation, particularly at the higher elevations, but there is great uncertainty for now.
