Winter arriving: MLK weekend part 2

The saying goes: if you don’t like the weather, just wait a minute. People in the north country for the weekend are in luck as long as they packed their cold-temperature waxes.

After a week with rain and warm weather, temperatures will take a dip and a downward-dipping jet stream will pick up moisture from the Great Lakes, bringing wind and powder snow to the northeast.

Snowy scene with bold letters 'Winter is Coming'

This post is about conditions for Jan. 13 2024, and forecast for the next few days. See jump links to Conditions and Forecast.

Conditions

While many areas are closed due to the rain, Great Glen has great snow, Garnet Hill is skiable on ample trails, and Edson Hill has opend all its trails. Craftsbury has groomed almost 40k, Paul Smith’s VIC has most trails open, and Prospect Mountain has managed to keep the trails going.

The warm weater comes to an end Sunday, and touring centers will have groom quickly or be faced with solid ice. BETA report of 1/11 is ‘the frozen slush report’.. on such a solid base, several inches of snow or several passes by a grooming machine is then needed to render it skiable.

But with cold temps (check), grooming (check), and more snow (check) all to come this week, skiing should be the best of the season by next weekend!

Forecast

Winter weather makes a strong comeback this week. Cold air will remain in the region for several days, with low pressure systems bringing moist air midweek and for the weekend. Expect breezes to 30mph and cold nights, with some places hitting single digits. Snow showers are possible or likely across some or all of the northeast throughout the week!

Scattered snow showers likely across the region Sunday, driven by arctic winds that will dip southward over the midwest before going northeast. This will create widespread lake effect snow for the region with some very heavy snowfall and even snow squalls that could make driving hazardous.

Monday day will be quiet, but in the evening evening. precipitation is possible when a low passing northward in the Atlantic mixes it up with the cold air in our area and drops snow showers. It may or may not drop any snow, and most of it will be south of the Albany to MA-VT/NH border. To the north, lake effect snow will continue, so. both southern and northern areas of nY and New England may get some snow from different directions.

Wednesday lake effect snows will continue dropping snow showers with some heavier snow across the north country.

The region could see snow showers more generally on Thursday, and by Friday another storm may impact the northeast for the early part of next weekend.
